Animal rescue is emotionally taxing, with a growing number of abandoned, mistreated, and suffering animals needing help.
Those who work in this field face limitations in resources and struggle with their own emotional well-being.
It's not uncommon for animal rescuers to experience stress, anxiety, and burnout.
This article is dedicated to you, rescue warriors, exploring the emotional toll and the need for vital support from within the community.
We recognize the overwhelming pressures you face and aim to shed light on ways to sustain and even enhance the critical work you do.
Your commitment to the cause is admirable, but your own well-being is just as important as that of the animals you rescue.
Despite the challenges and difficulties that come with animal rescue, your efforts are making a difference in the lives of animals in need.
You keep pushing forward and never give up on your mission to save and care for animals.
Sometimes, it's hard to see things in a positive manner when we are caught in the midst of a crisis, seeing our high expectations met with little progress rather than focusing on the small progress as being a success.
Recently, I experienced overwhelming emotions while birthing Pandora's Hope. I was failing in various aspects of my mission. Challenges, physical limitations, and emotional exhaustion made it challenging to stay motivated, and my efforts weren't as productive as I had hoped. I was also running a free online "Center Your Heart" challenge (now available for FREE for Pandora's Hope Members and Volunteers), which didn't have as many participants as I hoped.
I'm sharing this story to remind you that everyone faces moments of overwhelm, self-doubt, and inadequacy.
It takes hard work, and the determination not to let those instants define your path.
It's okay to have moments of doubt; the key is to accept those moments as signs that we need to take care of ourselves.
I knew I had to break free from this negative mindset. I revisited the mission and vision of Pandora's Hope and realized that, while I didn't reach my initial participation goal, I was still making a difference in the lives of those who participated, which was the primary purpose.
Sometimes, when you're deeply immersed in your animal rescue efforts, you lose sight of the small victories and successes along the way.
Shifting your perspective to appreciating the incremental progress will help you. It's perfectly normal to encounter obstacles.
When you start reaching that point of overwhelm, you can help yourself and support yourself to overcome those emotions and offer yourself some encouragement instead of beating yourself up.
Recognizing that you are doing the very best that we can, you can acknowledge that this is an opportunity to re-focus.
At the end of the article, I've included a workbook for you to download and fill in as you read through this post. Take some time to fill out each section of your worksheet and put some thought into it. You may very well surprise yourself with what it reveals to you!
Here are a few things you can do to help yourself in overwhelming times to move forward in a positive and constructive way.
When we start reaching that point of overwhelm, we can help ourselves and support ourselves to overcome those feelings and offer ourselves some encouragement instead of beating ourselves up.
1. Forgive Yourself / Give Yourself Permission To Be Human
It's essential to recognize that as a rescuer, you're only human and have limitations. Despite your best efforts, you may not be able to save every animal you come across, and that's okay. It's natural to feel overwhelmed at times, and it's crucial to remember that you're doing a commendable and brave job. You should take pride in your efforts and the difference you're making in the world. You're constantly learning and growing, and it's crucial to show yourself compassion when things get tough.
Instead of being too hard on yourself, try to find ways to manage your stress and prioritize self-care. Take breaks when you need to, and remind yourself that you can only accomplish so much in a day, and it's okay to set boundaries and take time for yourself. Forgiving yourself for any mistakes or setbacks is crucial and can be a liberating experience. Remember that every animal you save is a victory, and you're making a significant difference in their lives. By showing yourself compassion, taking care of your mental and physical health, and recognizing your limitations, you can continue to make a positive impact in the lives of animals in need.
2. Put Down The Phone / Stay Off Social Media
Social media has become an integral part of our lives, and it's hard to imagine a day without scrolling through our feeds. However, it's not always a bed of roses, and navigating the world of social media can be challenging, especially when we're already feeling stressed out. While social media allows us to catch up with friends and family, see what's going on in their lives, and stay up-to-date with the latest news and trends, it's also all too easy to get caught up in comparing negative comments from others. This can be really damaging to our mental health, leading to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. It's essential to be mindful of how we're feeling when we scroll through our feeds and check in with ourselves regularly. It's important to keep this in mind when we feel like we're falling into the overwhelmed trap. Sometimes, taking a break from social media can be an act of self-care. We need to prioritize our mental and physical well-being, which means stepping away from the app or putting down our phones if we get caught up in triggering emotions.
It's okay to take a break, take a deep breath, and focus on ourselves for a while. It's essential to be kind to ourselves and remember that we're enough, even if social media makes us feel otherwise. Social media can be a fantastic tool to stay connected. Still, it's important to use it mindfully and take breaks when we need to.
3. Make A List Of Your Strengths, Former Successes And Triumphs
It's common for us to overlook our achievements and focus on our struggles and setbacks, particularly when we're feeling down. However, taking a moment to remind ourselves of all the incredible things we've accomplished, no matter how small they may seem, can restore our distorted vision. Celebrating our accomplishments has a significant impact on our self-esteem and motivation. We can create a list of our achievements, triumphs, and proud moments, which can serve as a helpful reminder of all the positive aspects of our lives. Although it may feel strange to do, it can be a powerful tool to pull ourselves out of an emotional funk. We've overcome many challenges and obstacles in our lives, and it's crucial to give ourselves credit for all that we've achieved. By recognizing your accomplishments, you can celebrate your successes, increase your confidence, and motivate yourself to keep pushing forward. It's important to acknowledge that your achievements don't have to be significant or life-changing to be worthy of celebration. Even the smallest wins can bring a sense of accomplishment and pride.
4. Take A Step Back / Learn When To Say No
As human beings, we often struggle with setting boundaries and saying "no" to rescue projects. We want to be seen as reliable and helpful, but taking on too much can quickly become overwhelming and have a negative impact on our well-being. That's why it's crucial to prioritize and focus on what matters to us most. One way to avoid feeling burdened is by taking a step back and examining our "to-do" list. We need to ask ourselves if everything on it really needs to be done today. Being kind to yourself and cutting yourself some slack can go a long way in reducing stress and increasing productivity.
If you were advising your best friend, you would never hesitate to tell them to free themselves from any tasks that aren't essential at the moment. The same advice applies to you - you need to remember that your time and energy are valuable resources that should be used wisely. By prioritizing the things that bring you joy and fulfillment, you can lead a more balanced and fulfilling rescue life in the long run. Saying "no" may feel challenging, especially if you're used to saying "yes" to everything. However, it's necessary for your well-being, and you owe it to yourself to take care of yourselvf and focus on what truly matters.
5. Take A Break / Get Some Distance
As our daily lives become increasingly hectic, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed out. In order to cope with the many demands on your time and energy, it's important to prioritize self-care and take some time for yourself. This is especially true in the field of animal rescue, where the work can be emotionally challenging and exhausting. When you're feeling burnt out, it's crucial to take a step back and recharge your batteries. Whether we need a short break to regroup or a longer period of rest and relaxation, taking time for self-care helps us come back to our work with renewed energy and a fresh perspective. It's important to remember that taking a break doesn't mean you're giving up or being lazy. In fact, taking a short break can actually make you more productive in the long run. When you give yourself time to rest and recharge, you're better able to focus and progress on your goals. There are many ways to practice self-care and recharge our batteries. Some people find relaxation in activities like watching a funny video, going for a walk, or dancing to their favorite song. Others may prefer more introspective activities like meditation or journaling. Whatever your preference, it's important to find activities that help you feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Remember, taking care of yourself is an important part of achieving your goals and living a happy, healthy life. So go ahead and take that break – you deserve it!
6. Get Enough Sleep / Self-Care
It cannot be overstated how important rest is, especially when you work in a field as emotionally demanding as animal rescue. As much as it is necessary to care for the animals, it is equally important to take care of yourself. One of the most effective ways to do this is by prioritizing sleep. When we don't get enough sleep, our bodies and minds suffer. Lack of rest can lead to increased sensitivity and reduced cognitive function. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed and unable to keep up with everything that needs to be done. You may find yourself struggling to focus, make decisions, and handle stress. Essentially, you're not able to function at your best. We all know from experience how irritable and cranky we can get when we're tired, and as adults, we're no different. Our bodies and minds require sleep to recharge and refresh, to process our thoughts, and to repair and rebuild cells. That's why it is so crucial to ensure that you get enough rest each night. If you're having trouble getting a good night's sleep, try going to bed a little earlier and making sleep a priority. Establish a routine that helps you wind down before bedtime, and stick to it as much as possible. Getting a full night's sleep can help you be more productive and feel more in control of your day. Remember, if you can't get a full night's sleep, consider taking a power nap. Just 20 minutes of sleep can make a big difference in your productivity levels. When you're well-rested, you'll be able to accomplish more in less time, and your brain will be more energized and better able to process information. Be kind to yourself and make sleep a priority. By doing so, you'll be able to give more of yourself to the animals you care for and to everything else in your life.
7. Nourish Your Body With Healthy Food And Fluids
When we nourish our bodies with a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, we provide the essential nutrients our brains and bodies need to cope with stress and maintain optimal function. Healthy eating can boost our energy levels, stabilize our mood, and enhance our ability to focus and make clear decisions. It's a self-care practice that empowers us to tackle life's challenges with resilience and a sense of control.
By making mindful choices about what you eat, you're not just nurturing your body; you're also strengthening your ability to handle overwhelming situations with grace and strength.
When you nourish your body with the right nutrients, you enhance your ability to concentrate, manage stress, and stay emotionally resilient. Choosing nourishing foods can be a form of self-compassion, offering the support and strength you need to navigate overwhelming moments with a clear and grounded mind.
8. Share Your Struggles With Others / You Are Not Alone
It's natural to face struggles and difficult times in our lives. As animal rescuers, you may face emotional challenges that can be particularly tough to deal with. When you're feeling overwhelmed, it's important to take the time to acknowledge these emotions and process them. It's necessary to remind ourselves that these thoughts are not valid and that we have the strength to overcome them. This can be easier said than done.
Seeking support and connecting with others who understand what you're going through can make all the difference. Connecting with other animal rescuers and sharing your struggles with someone who is kind and supportive can help you gain a new perspective and find ways to cope with your emotions.
Through sharing our experiences, we can make meaningful, deep connections with others. We can find comfort and support in knowing that we're not alone and that there is always someone who understands what we're going through. Don't be afraid to reach out to your community and other animal rescuers and share your journey with them. You may be surprised by how much you have in common and by how much you can learn from each other. By seeking support and sharing our experiences, you can overcome emotional challenges and become stronger and more resilient.
Remember, you are not alone in these feelings. By acknowledging and addressing them, you can continue your vital work in animal rescue with resilience and compassion.
